The Inclusion Explorer: Shared dialogue makes the difference

This Inclusion Explorer is a practical reflection method that you can use to address morally difficult situations around diversity and inclusion, to create space for openness and foster shared learning.

Navigating differences isn't always easy. Sometimes they lead to situations that feel uneasy or even unsafe, and it can be difficult to know how to respond, or how to learn from them. These kinds of situations can be challenging, but know that you're not alone.

"Do you want to understand each other better and gain more insight into how to deal effectively with diversity and inclusion?"

The Inclusion Explorer is a conversational tool you can use to openly discuss and learn from morally challenging situations related to diversity and inclusion. This could be a current work experience, or something from your past that bothers you. Developed for and in collaboration with healthcare providers, the tool can help you reflect on and deal with situations in which you feel unsafe or unsure how to handle them. It can also help you learn from them, both in your interactions with colleagues or team members, and with patients and their families.

Why is the Inclusion Explorer so important?

Through effective conversations, mutual understanding deepens and you might experience support, even if you disagree. This makes you aware of different perspectives, prejudices, inequalities in opportunities and experiences, and gives you the opportunity to address these together. Effective collaboration requires hearing all voices and respecting differences. Only then can you truly respond to everyone's needs.

Inclusion Explorer’s method of dialogue

First, you'll have a conversation with each other. The goal of such a conversation isn't to convince each other of your own point of view, but to gain more insight into each other's perspectives and learn from personal experiences and situations. This way, you'll grow closer and learn how to consider each other and each other's feelings.

Using the Inclusion Explorer, you go through the following three steps:
1. Experiencing the situation
2. Responding to the situation
3. Weighing what is important for everyone

After completing these three steps, there's a moment for reflection. How did the participants experience the conversation? Is there any feedback to discuss for the next session?

"But what if you're afraid to discuss diversity and social safety for fear of negative consequences and reactions?"

The Inclusion Explorer has developed several discussion conditions to further support you in this:
